Shipbuilder Welder Apprenticeship
Want to help build something big? As a Shipbuilder Welder apprentice, you’ll train at Fincantieri Marinette Marine and gain the skills needed to safely operate tools, follow blueprints, and build world-class ships — all while earning a paycheck.
What does a Shipbuilder Welder do?
Shipbuilder Welders work with tools, machines, and materials used in shipbuilding. As an apprentice, you鈥檒l learn how to:
- Safely set up and use machinery and production equipment
- Read and follow blueprints
- Measure and inspect materials accurately
- Understand manufacturing processes and quality standards
- Follow OSHA safety guidelines in a shipyard setting
What will I learn?
To earn your completion credential, you鈥檒l complete hands-on training and take related instruction in subjects like:
- Industrial math
- Industrial communication
- Manufacturing systems and processes
- Blueprint reading
- OSHA 10 safety standards
What are the qualifications?
To apply for this apprenticeship, you must:
- Be hired by Fincantieri Marinette Marine
- Meet employer-specific requirements (such as work readiness and safety awareness)
- Be at least 17 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED庐 (recommended)
Note: Entry requirements may vary by employer.
How long is the program?
This apprenticeship takes about 1陆 years and includes:
- 2,472 hours of on-the-job training
- 628 hours of paid related instruction
- Additional coursework may be required
How do I get started?
Step 1: Get Hired - You must first be employed by Fincantieri Marinette Marine, where you鈥檒l complete your on-the-job training.
Step 2: Get Sponsored - Your employer will work with the DWD - Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards to set up your apprenticeship contract.
Once approved, you鈥檒l begin training for your career in shipbuilding.

Classes wherever you have an internet connection.
- An in-person career experience, such as an internship, practicum, or credit for prior learning, may be required.
- Some online courses may be held at specific dates/times.
- Day
- Classes between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
- Evening
- Classes between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
- Weekend
- A combination of online classes and Saturday and/or Sunday classes.
- Full-time
- 12 or more credits per term.
- Part-time
- Fewer than 12 credits per term.
